Life can be overwhelming. Whether you’re facing stress, anxiety, depression, loneliness, or a personal crisis, it’s important to remember that you don’t have to go through it alone. Help is available, and sometimes the first step is simply reaching out.

The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline provides free, confidential emotional support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for anyone experiencing emotional distress or a mental health crisis.

What is 988?

The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline connects callers and texters with trained crisis counselors who are ready to listen without judgment. The service is available nationwide and is designed to provide immediate support, help de-escalate crises, and connect people with local resources when needed.

You can:

  • Call 988 from any phone.
  • Text 988 to connect with a crisis counselor by text message.
  • Chat online through the official 988 Lifeline website 988lifeline.org.

Whether you’re experiencing thoughts of suicide, a mental health crisis or substance use concerns, or simply feeling overwhelmed, caring support is only three digits away.

When Should You Contact 988?

You don’t have to be in immediate danger to reach out.

Consider contacting 988 if you or someone you know is:

If you’re unsure whether your situation is “serious enough,” it’s okay to call anyway. Crisis counselors are there to help.

What Happens When You Call?

Many people hesitate because they don’t know what to expect. When you contact 988:
  1. A trained crisis counselor will answer.
  2. They’ll listen to what’s happening and ask a few questions to better understand your situation.
  3. They’ll work with you to help you feel safer and identify helpful next steps.
  4. If appropriate, they can provide information about local mental health resources and support services.
The goal is to provide compassionate support—not judgment.

Supporting Someone Else

If someone you know is struggling:

  • Listen without interrupting or judging.
  • Encourage them to contact 988.
  • Offer to stay with them while they call or text.
  • If they are in immediate danger or have attempted suicide, call 911 immediately or take them to the nearest emergency room.

Sometimes simply letting someone know you care can make a meaningful difference.

Mental Health Matters

Just as we care for our physical health, it’s important to care for our mental and emotional well-being. Reaching out for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

By sharing information about the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, we can help reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and remind others that support is always available.
