30 & Thriving: This Year Marks Exciting Milestone for NDTC

This November, NDTC is celebrating its 30th anniversary of offering essential telecom services to residents and businesses in the Devils Lake basin and surrounding communities.

Our mission to “provide a quality communication network that strengthens our communities” has remained true since the company began. Keep reading to learn more about our rich history!

Back to Our Roots

The roots of NDTC go back to 1993, when a consortium known as The Phone Company (TPC), formed by United Communications (Langdon, ND), Dakota Central (Carrington, ND), and Polar Communications (Park River, ND), purchased 15 exchanges in the Devils Lake area to form North Dakota Telephone Company (NDTC).

On November 1st, 1993, NDTC began operations with 29 employees. Within three years, NDTC added 11 exchanges and five more employees. This brought the number of staff to 34 people and marked the beginning of an innovative period for the company.

Development Over the Years

During the past three decades, NDTC grew our team, installed digital switching on our network, and buried thousands of miles of fiber optic technology. This allows us to remain prepared for any future demands on the network. However, our list of accomplishments continues to grow.

NDTC has facilitated service offerings stemming from digital TV to surveillance cameras and many additional customer-centered products. Over the past few years, NDTC has instituted programs to ensure the cyber safety of all users of its network.

Additionally, NDTC has been on the leading edge of telecommunication advancements by becoming a Smart Rural Community Gig-Certified provider in 2018 as a member of the Rural Broadband Association (NTCA). Gig internet is the fastest internet available, and our fiber optic broadband internet can deliver speeds up to 10 gig. We’re ensuring that with the fiber broadband infrastructure in place, our customers will continue to have access to high-speed internet. NDTC is also a member of the Broadband Association of North Dakota (BAND) to represent the rural interests of our state’s information-technology-based economy.

“As we celebrate our 30th anniversary this year, our hearts are filled with gratitude as well as the zest to keep the service to our customers on an exceptional level,” says Rodney Hoffmeyer, CEO and General Manager of NDTC. “Our vision to connect and enhance our customers’ lives has always been at the heart of what we do. It has been a memorable journey with a great team. I look forward to seeing what the future brings.”

We’re thankful for the loyalty of our community over the years. Our team at NDTC looks forward to serving you another 30 years and beyond! To learn more about NDTC, visit our revamped About Us page.
