TP-Link Routers Face a Possible U.S. Ban

Ban Chinese tech company TP-Link accounts for about two-thirds of the U.S. router market. It's currently under federal investigation for alleged security flaws and ties to Chinese cyberattacks, and TP-Link routers might be banned in 2025.

A Microsoft report in 2023 linked TP-Link to Chinese password spraying cyberattacks — a form of hacking that exploits default or weak passwords. Federal agencies including the Commerce Department, Defense Department, and Justice Department are scrutinizing the company for security risks as well as potential antitrust violations.

TP-Link routers are often about half the price of what's charged by competitors such as Asus, a Taiwanese company; and Netgear, a U.S. company. The Justice Department is investigating whether these cheap prices violate a federal law that prohibits attempts on monopolies by selling products for less than they cost to manufacture.

In addition to being the most common router choice for consumers who purchase their own Wi-Fi equipment, TP-Link also makes the routers that more than 300 U.S. internet providers send to customers who opt to rent equipment from them. They're also widely used by government agencies. Experts warn that the sheer volume of TP-Link routers makes them an attractive target for cybercriminals, and the risks aren't limited to the consumer level. They could also impact national security.

We provide Calix routers to our internet customers. If you have questions or concerns about Wi-Fi security, you can call us at 701.662.1100.
Take Precautions When Selling Online to Local Buyers

Messenger" Using websites like Facebook Marketplace can be a great way to sell things you no longer need, such as household goods, to others in your community. However, you do need to be concerned about safety.

Always take these precautions:
  • When meeting the buyer, maintain control of the interaction. Select a well-lit public location of your choice, such as the lobby of the local police station. Never meet at a residence, especially your own.

  • Bring a friend or family member along with you for added safety when you meet up with the buyer. If that's not possible, let someone you trust know your plans.

  • Don't overshare personal information. Remember, any personal information you disclose can potentially be exploited by individuals with malicious intentions.

  • Make the payment expectation clear. Make sure the buyer understands you only accept cash or use a cash app. Only hand over the item once you’ve received full payment.

  • Remain aware of your surroundings even after the transaction is complete, as you could be followed from your location, particularly if cash is involved.
By planning ahead and acting with safety in mind, you can make extra money without putting yourself at risk.
Always Call 811 Before You Dig

Shovel Digging If you plan to begin any project that involves digging — such as building a patio, putting up a fence, or planting bushes and trees — remember to call 811 before work begins.

Every digging job requires a call to 811 to have underground utility lines marked. In some cases, lines are buried close to the surface and could easily be damaged by even shallow digging, resulting in service interruptions to your neighborhood.

When you call, simply tell the operator where you’re planning to dig and what type of work you’ll be doing. The affected local utilities will send a locator to your property, free of charge. Then you’ll know what’s below and be able to dig safely.

As one of your local service providers, NDTC thanks you in advance for your cooperation!
