Protecting Your Privacy with NDTC: What You Need to Know About CPNI

Each year, NDTC shares information with our customers about Customer Proprietary Network Information (CPNI) and why protecting your personal information is so important to us. As your communications provider, safeguarding your privacy is a responsibility we take seriously.

What Is CPNI?

CPNI stands for Customer Proprietary Network Information. It refers to certain types of sensitive information that telephone companies and internet service providers collect in order to deliver services to their customers. This information can include details about the services you use and certain data connected to your account.

CPNI is protected by federal law and enforced by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). These regulations ensure that service providers cannot misuse or share information about your calling activity or service usage without your permission.

Examples of CPNI

Some examples of CPNI that may be associated with your services through NDTC include:

  • Call Details: The phone numbers you call, the numbers that call you, and the time, date, and duration of those calls.
  • Usage Data: The number of lines on your account, service features (such as call waiting), and general calling patterns.

What Is NOT Considered CPNI?

It’s also helpful to understand what does not fall under CPNI protection:

  • Directory Information: Your name, address, and phone number when listed in a public directory.
  • Non-Telecommunications Services: Information related to internet browsing activity or TV services.

How CPNI Is Protected

Under the Telecommunications Act, service providers must protect the privacy and security of customers’ service-related and billing information. CPNI may only be used, disclosed, or accessed in specific situations, including:

  • When required by law
  • With the customer’s approval
  • When necessary to provide the service for which the information was collected
  • When providing a caller’s location to a 911 emergency call center

Our Commitment to Your Privacy

At NDTC, protecting your personal information is a top priority. Safeguarding Customer Proprietary Network Information is just one of the ways we work to maintain your privacy and security every day.

If you ever have questions about how your information is protected, please don’t hesitate to contact our team. We’re always happy to help.
